Lyrics

VERSE 1
Morning you woke with pounding heart
and body paralyzed
Silently screaming through lungs of stone, remembering a world on fire…

PRE-CHORUS 1
There were rising seas,
air too thick to breathe,
nations marching to their doom
There were thundering sounds,
and mushroom clouds,
and the battlefield filled every womb

CHORUS 1
It was just a dream… Just a dream
Can you see the morning star arising?
What a blessing… What a blessing
To wake up with the time still left,
to turn the tide... to turn the tide

VERSE 2
Better to end it than suffer through
the sadness and the pain
So you swallowed the poison
and mercy you prayed,
“Take me back from where I came!”

PRE-CHORUS 2
And as the potion took hold
and the world grew cold,
you screamed, “This is not my fate!”
But it filled your bones
and your lungs of stone,
and you knew it was too late

CHORUS 2
It was just a dream… Just a dream
Can you see the morning star arising?
What a blessing… What a blessing
To wake up with the time still left,
to turn the tide… to turn the tide
The time still left to turn the tide

BRIDGE
So why, birdsong? Why, photons?
Why, sweet breeze? And why, galaxies?
And why through the seas,
did your ancestors rise?
And why through the struggle,
the will to survive?
And why did they pass on
this sorrow and laughter,
And the power to dream
the next great chapter?
And why do the walls seem to suddenly fall?
And why does the arc bend to justice at all?
And why through the concrete,
do flowers now bloom?
And why did we awaken
not a moment too soon

CHORUS 3
From the dream…
to see the morning star arising?
What a blessing… What a blessing
To wake up… There’s still time.

Liner notes

This song was inspired by my dear friend Jean Rohe... She had a dream in which the world had become so polluted and wartorn that she decided to take pills to end her life. She took the pills, and just as they were taking effect, she realized she didn't want to die. It was too late, and she woke up, shaken. She asked me what I thought it meant and this song came out. The bridge is inspired by the Awakening the Dreamer program of the Pachamama Alliance, as well as Joanna Macy's profound work on Deep Time.
